Vietnamese Airlines Plan Flight Reductions

(MENAFN) Vietnamese carriers are preparing to lower flight frequencies and temporarily halt some domestic routes starting in April as they adjust operations to manage the impact of escalating jet fuel prices, according to a report published Friday.

The report, referencing the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, indicated that airlines are reviewing their flight networks and capacity strategies to sustain operations while mitigating the financial burden of increased fuel expenses.

The national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, is expected to suspend seven domestic routes beginning April 1 and may implement deeper reductions of 10% to 20% in total flight volume if jet fuel prices climb to between "$160 and $200 per barrel," the report stated.

Domestic services are likely to experience the most significant decreases, with flight numbers anticipated to fall by 12% to 26%, whereas international routes could see reductions ranging from 4% to 18%.

Low-cost carrier Pacific Airlines announced plans to lower capacity by 8% to 30% from April 1, primarily by cutting flights during off-peak periods. Similarly, VietJet Air intends to reduce overall flight capacity by 18%, concentrating mainly on domestic operations.

Authorities noted that airlines are aiming to maintain service on crucial domestic routes, especially those connecting Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City, while continuing flights on paths deemed important for socio-political and economic reasons.

The report also mentioned that airlines are evaluating fuel surcharges and potential ticket price increases starting in April as fuel costs remain high and supply conditions continue to be unpredictable.
